Black & White

Just before Christmas I did a project with the Hamilton Suzuki School of Music. I photographed quite a number of their students, but instead of doing the traditional "school photo" thing, I tried to emulate the style of a traditional musician's portrait. It was a lot of fun to do, and I think the parents appreciated the images they received.

I was showing off a number of the prints to Ingy, a photographer friend of mine. This fellow is a long-time shooter, and was really impressed with the quality of the output. Previously he would have insisted that the only way to get a really good black & white print would be to shoot film. There is a hybrid process that is popular with black & white fans, and that is to shoot film - preferably medium format or larger - then scan the negatives so that the final result can still go through photoshop for editing and final printing. My work was 100% digital. What do you think?
